Size Does Matter

Attorney General Greg Stumbo is not happy with what Ernie Fletcher has done to his budget.

From today’s Herald Leader:

“Attorney General Greg Stumbo, whose office is investigating personnel actions in Gov. Ernie Fletcher's administration, is blasting Fletcher's proposed cuts to his office…..

State budget director Brad Cowgill said last night that the governor was not directly involved in coming up with appropriations for all six constitutional offices; he only wanted the same standards to apply to each office…..

Appropriations to constitutional offices were not based on politics or any investigation they might be conducting, Cowgill said.”

Appropriations to constitutional offices are not based on politics --- give me a break.

Anyone that thinks politics didn’t enter into the discussion of the Attorney General’s budget never participated in the Frankfort budget wars.

Size of a budget is one way you measure power in Frankfort and size does matter.

But I’m not too worried the AG’s budget. Greg Stumbo may be the Attorney General now but he was the House Majority Leader for a long time and probably still has one or two favors owed to him by members of that chamber.

And of course the fact that Stumbo is a leading contender for the Democratic nomination for Governor will have absolutely no bearing on any decisions made by the Democratic controlled house when they put together a budget.

I’m sorry Brad, but the budget is all about politics.
