Sometimes I read an article in the paper that makes me wonder about motivation. Here is one from today’s Herald Leader:
FRANKFORT -- Democratic Attorney General Greg Stumbo gave $500 to the campaign of Supreme Court Justice John Roach, who previously served as top legal counsel for the governor's administration that's being investigated by Stumbo's office.
Both Stumbo and Roach's campaign yesterday confirmed the check, which Stumbo wrote earlier this month.
Stumbo, who was out of town yesterday, said in a statement that he made the donation because, "I like John Roach."
"As attorney general I've had the opportunity to work with him, and I've been impressed with his legal abilities," Stumbo said. "This is a non-partisan election and I decided to support John."
There is no such thing as a non-partisan race in Kentucky and anyone that buys that line is an idiot. Roach is about as non-partisan as Lexington Mayoral Candidate Bill Farmer, or Council Candidate K.C. Crosby.
So I ask myself, why did Greg do this? I can think of two possibilities:
One, Greg has given up on running for Governor and has decided to support anyone he happens to like. This is not a likely option.
Two, Greg thinks he is so Teflon, that in addition to his personal baggage, he can carry this load and still win the Governor’s Mansion. With Jerry Lundergan and Dale Emmons help he may be able to do just that.
But for me all this does is give me another reason to hope that Ed Hatchett and Jonathan Miller team up and run for the top seats.
I want Democrats that are honest and so squeaky clean that no one can question their motivation or desire to server the public good.
It also helps if they support other Democrats.
