Fletcher Gets One Right

Ok, let’s chalk this up to the “blind hog finds an acorn’ category. Indicted Governor Ernie Fletcher has made some awful appointments to the bench, starting with boy judge John Roach.

But this time he got one right. He appointed Ray Corns to Franklin District Court. I hope Judge Corns continues on the bench after the election. Right now being appointed by Ernie really isn’t a great campaign booster.

Spiderman Could Take Spinning Lessons

Sometimes I can get a good laugh from watching politicians spin an issue. Yesterday’s Herald Leader had a great example of political spin.

State Rep. J. Stan Lee, not the creator of Spiderman, once again demonstrated his ability to run in front of crowd and then claim to be leading.

“Last regular session of the General Assembly, legislators came together in a bipartisan manner to unanimously passed Senate Bill 93. The will of the people spoke loudly and clearly on this issue.

Attacking our fallen service men and women would not be tolerated in Kentucky. I am proud to say that I was the co-sponsor of the House version of the bill.”

Stan was a co-sponsor of House Bill 33 along with the usual group that waves the flag anytime something military comes before the House. The list of sponsors is below:

“M. Weaver, J. Carr, M. Cherry, H. Cornett, T. Couch, R. Crimm, M. Denham, S. Lee, T. McKee, C. Meade, R. Nelson, F. Nesler, S. Nunn, D. Pasley, T. Riner, A. Simpson, B. Smith, J. Stacy”

In all fairness, Stan sometimes has a good idea, like not letting kids drive drunk or making fat kids get some exercise.

But generally Stan’s focus is on bashing anyone that doesn’t measure up to his personal values. Such as: a woman’s right to control her own body, removing the confidentiality of juvenile court records, banning stem cell research, and last but not least extending client-attorney privilege to include not reporting abuse, neglect, exploitation, or dependency.

I won’t even go into his need to keep Hispanics out of higher education or his obsession with tongue splitting.

What was so great about Stan’s article wasn’t him taking credit for a consensus piece of legislation, it was the way he spun Fred Phelps and his group of hate mongering homophobes into an attack on the liberals and the Herald Leader. I guess he’s still a little put out the Herald Leader endorsed me in 2004 for his House seat.

You also have to appreciate how a guy who never served in the military wraps himself in the flag. Stan knows how to play to the conservative Kentucky voter.

“Well, this is one American who is not going to worship at the altar of judicial activism. This is one American who is not going to bow down to the pagan idol that is the ACLU. This is one American who is not going to turn his back on our military families, especially during a time of war.”

I guess that Stan couldn’t bring himself to say that hating people for who they love is wrong. Nor could he admit that when we place discrimination in our state constitution we invite the Fred Phelps of the world to come here. Fred and Stan share one trait; they both know a receptive audience when they see one.
