Good Legislation

I have taken a number of shots at some of the less than inspiring legislation proposed for the next session of the General Assembly so here are two good bills pre-filed for the 2007 session of the General Assembly.

First, a common sense change to reduce the opportunity of state workers being the victims of identity theft sponsored by Julian Carroll. This would be a good standard for all employers in the Commonwealth.

BR 256 - Senator Julian M Carroll (10/19/06)
AN ACT relating to the identification of state employees. Amend KRS 18A.030 to require the secretary of the Personnel Cabinet to substitute personal identification numbers for social security numbers to identify state employees, and to prohibit the public disclosure of employee personal identification numbers; amend KRS 18A.0551 to conform.

Second, it’s about time somebody realized how dangerous it is being a protective services worker. We pay these people very little money to do a job most people don’t want. It’s sad it takes a murder to get a bill like this introduced.

BR 300 - Representative C B Embry Jr (10/30/06)
AN ACT relating to hazardous duty retirement. Amend KRS 61.592 to change the definition of a hazardous position to include positions classified in the social services series that involve child protective services investigations or ongoing face-to-face contact with families whose children have been placed in the custody of the cabinet.

John Roach - Spammer

Like many people I maintain multiple E-mail accounts. Yesterday I received an E-mail to an account other than Ralph@RalphLong.com. What crawled into my E-mail was spam from John Roach. Contents of the E-Mail are below.

I know that politicians are exempted from the CAN-Spam Law, and there isn’t a Kentucky statue banning this kind of advertising.

The company providing the spam service goes to great lengths to talk about permission based E-mail and how they hate spammers. I would too if I were in the Spam business.

In case you haven’t guessed yet, I really don’t care too much for spammers and to my relief this is the only political Spam I’ve received this election.

So, I never signed up for the Keep Justice Roach Committee. I have signed up for Republican Party propaganda and I usually read the stuff from the White House when I need a laugh or a good reason to be outraged again. But I never signed up for little John’s spam list.

I am aware that when I post my E-mail address on my web site that I’m going to get a certain amount of E-mail from spammers. Most of the spam comes from Russia, and Pacific Rim Countries. Every day some spam gets through the filters so I delete the get rich quick schemes, the invitations from gambling sites, and the advertising that wants to expand certain parts of my anatomy.

But in a way, I was glad to get the spam from Justice Roach for one simple reason. It confirms something my Mother always told me. “Water seeks its own level.”

John Roach, con artists, snake oil salesmen, gamblers, and pornographers, are all using a variation of the same technique.

Here’s the E-mail.

Serving as a Justice on the Supreme Court has been a life-long dream. I am running to stay on the Supreme Court so I can continue to serve the people of my district and make sure that all Kentuckians receive honest and fair justice. As we approach Election Day, I respectfully ask not only for your vote on November 7th, but for your support of our efforts.

There is still plenty to be done around the campaign. If you have not signed up for a yard sign, there is still time. Just go to keepjusticeroach.com and click on the volunteer button. There you can sign up for a yard sign. You can also sign up to help the campaign by walking door to door in your neighborhood. And finally, please ask your family members, friends and neighbors to vote to Keep Justice Roach. Voters in Anderson, Bourbon, Boyle, Clark, Fayette, Franklin, Jessamine, Madison, Mercer, Scott and Woodford Counties can vote in this election.

As Election Day gets closer and closer, I will keep you updated on the latest news from the campaign by e-mail. Thanks again for your support.
