KRS Executive Director Burnside is "ungraded"

Executive Director Robert M. (Mike) Burnside

There is a reason you can’t find out how much someone make when they work for the Kentucky Retirement Systems (KRS). They make a lot more than the other employees working for state government.

I guess you can pay more when you have your own little fiefdom.

For example, the lowest paid state worker starts at $14,950.80 per year, if you work for KRS the bottom salary is $20,136.00. So you get about 25 percent more if you are working for KRS. I’m sure that answering the phone, or taking out the trash is 25 percent more challenging at KRS.

But I shouldn’t pick on these folks; $20,000 before taxes still isn’t much these days.

If you look at the other end of the scale things get a bit plusher. First off we have absolutely no clue how much the Chief Investment Officer T J Carlson and the Executive Director Robert Burnside make because their salaries are “Ungraded”.

My guess is somewhere north of $200,000 but that is pure speculation, however we can at least get a range for some of the others.

The Chief Operations Officer William Thielen’s starting salary is $111,864 and can top out at about $167,000.

The General Council Schuyler Ott and the Chief Benefits Officer Charlene Haydon start at $92,436 and top out at about $138,000

The Retiree Health Care Director Rick Schultz and the Line of Business Project Manager Chris Clark start at $84,048 and top out at about $125,000.

We will never know how much these guys actually make until someone breaches the walls of the fiefdom.
