Once again the voice of the homophobic caucus rises to address domestic-partner benefits.
From the Herald Leader:
“UK's Staff Senate is set to vote Thursday on a resolution of support for domestic-partner benefits.
State Rep. Stan Lee, R-Lexington, and some other lawmakers have said they might seek legislation prohibiting universities from providing domestic-partner benefits.”
The obvious question is why stop with domestic-partner benefits?
Let’s have the legislature review the curriculum of all university academic departments.
How about, establishing a legislative committee to weekly review the success of the football and basketball programs and mandate plays the coaches must use.
We could also have the legislature review all of the medical decisions made at the Chandler Medical Center. Those doctors may be treating the “wrong people” and spending our tax dollars.
Or maybe the legislature should just but out.
Now I would like to think that Stan is just a political opportunist playing on the fears and prejudices of voters while wrapping himself in the flag so tightly that the blood is not reaching his brain.
Of course Stan has a fantasy of becoming Congressman Lee from Kentucky’s 6th District and he likes jump out on issues his conservative base can rally around like bashing gays, unions and illegal workers.
But he and his cronies in the House should quit grand standing and leave this kind of decision to the University of Kentucky administration. If they don’t like how the University of Kentucky is run they can always cut state funding.
By the way, take a look at Stan Lee’s record.

Strike Three
In the game of managing a political party Ernie Fletcher just struck out again.
From the Herald Leader:
“Supporters of Gov. Ernie Fletcher failed last night in a bid to oust one of the governor's outspoken critics from the post of Jefferson County Republican chairman.
Several Republicans had been privately trying to launch a coup within the Louisville branch of the party to replace its chairman, Jack Richardson IV, who has called Fletcher "politically inept" and has urged the governor to hang up his 2007 re-election bid.”
Not being able to oust a county chairman coupled with his inability to get political crony Larry Forgy on the Executive Committee of the Kentucky Republican party and his inability to oust Darrell Brock Jr. as the Chairman of the Party leaves Ernie heading for the political bullpen.
Of course he did manage to soften the blow to Forgy with a $100,000 state contract. Talk about things that don’t pass the smell test.
Still, three strikes and out for this political batter.

Defining a Tyrant
I am so tired of hearing that we should blindly follow George W. Bush and his merry band down any trail they would traverse.
I do not believe it is wrong to question our leaders. Not only is it not wrong, it is absolutely necessary to question the leaders of our government.
Leaders who deny the people the right to question their decisions do not deserve to lead.
To characterize citizens who question leaders as disloyal is wrong. The group of me that wrote the words below were called disloyal and traitors. But the words were true when written and true today.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Look at Bush’s policies he meets the definition of a tyrant. His policies serve a small group of people at the expense of the majority. Not to question these policies would be a clear act of disloyalty to this country
